Being a Manager is Taught, Not Born

Hey there,

How are you doing?

I’ve just finished a whole week of delivering manager training courses, and I wanted to share one of the biggest insights that landed with the workshop audiences: it was just how big and vital the role of a manager is.

And the fact that, more often than not, no training is given for it. If you consider all of the tasks that a manager is meant to deliver - from forecasting through to task assignment and conflict management, they really do cover a huge breadth of necessary skills. Combine that with qualities such as great communication, adaptability, and resilience and it's no wonder that people struggle and avoid certain tasks, especially when it's blended with the need to deliver on the day job.

See, here’s my thinking: Yes, there are definitely some people who have a natural aptitude for getting great outcomes from a team of people but, more often than not, we absolutely have to develop and nurture talent to help them understand how they can best utilise their strengths, and overcome their blind spots and overdone strengths, in order to become not only effective, but authentic and confident managers.

Is it really fair to rely on little more than common sense and maybe some hand-me-down wisdom, or on-the-job experience?

Management training and coaching are absolutely needed here because, believe me, not only is so much not being communicated or managed with your broader workforce, but you have also got a lot of your managing talent spending a huge amount of time in their own heads; either worrying that they’re not entirely clear on what they’re doing or believing they are not doing a good job.

And that’s really not fair.

So, support them with the management training and development they clearly need, and believe me, you will undoubtedly see the results. In not only their engagement and motivation, but also the subsequent workplace performance of both them and their teams.

As ever, we’re here if you want any support in navigating this minefield - get in touch.

Have a wonderful week.
