Pay Freeze, Anyone?

Hi there,

"We know. It’s been a really tough year and you’ve worked really hard… but I’m afraid there’s been a pay freeze."

Yep, there it is: the conversation bound to strike fear into any manager’s heart. Let’s be honest, it’s not a comfortable one and one that’s unlikely to land well. However, with my never-ending and ever-infuriatingly positive mindset, I like to try and think there’s an opportunity in even the somewhat less jubilant and, dare I say, cr*ppier moments of life.

As a manager, this is a perfect opportunity to work on your communication skills, deliver challenging news and use it as an opportunity to bring your team together. Of course, you can use the obvious route of talking about the global backdrop… ‘don’t you know you’re lucky to have a job’ line. But, let’s be frank, that’s about as uplifting and motivating as the promise of a a night in the jungle sandwiched between Nigel Farage and an elephant’s right testicle. So, why not put it back to your team and see what else you could do to support them and ensure they feel valued?

- Would they like to consider some management training or leadership development training (by the way, we know some brilliant management training courses if they do, ahem)?

- Maybe working in a different area or territory of the business?

- Or what about some support in launching a new venture, event or partnership?

I mean those kind of things are genuinely money can’t buy and can not only be life-changing, but also exactly the kind of thing that makes sure someone feels committed to working with a business, and specifically you as a manager.

Then, how else could you celebrate them and reward their work? Think about anything from get-togethers, awards, lunches and early Friday finishes. Again, something fun, something uniting. Something that says we’re a team and in this together.

Like I said, a pay freeze can initially feel like a bit of a kick in the teeth, but we all have the option to decide how we act in every situation - and even the most annoying things can turn out to be God-sends. Even if they arrive looking like a nightmare. Your role as a manager is to create the space to talk about it, unite and, just possibly, turn your corporate lead into collective gold.

And, the moment you’ve all been waiting for – this week’s TikTok.

Here’s what to do if you’re a manager with a team who might be feeling a bit tired and frustrated (ooh, I’m being a right negative nellie this week, aren’t I?).

As ever, if there’s anything you want to chat about when it comes to management development or our new retainers (or PUSH in-house as we’re calling them) then we’re your team!

Give us a shout and until next week, bye for now!
