Oh hey,
I’ve made a bold decision, which I promise myself every year but never actually do, to take time off!
Here’s the thing: over the last couple of years, PUSH has changed. Rach, PUSH’s Head of Clients and I have pretty much rebuilt the business.
Yes, we absolutely still deliver the mental health, personal development, and wellbeing content that was where the business first began.
However, last year, I asked the team, if we were starting PUSH from scratch, where would we put our focus now?
We ran a nationwide survey in the back end of 2022 with YouGov and uncovered the thing teams were crying out for most: training for middle managers. So, that was where we wanted to develop the business - but of course, with a PUSH-spin!
So, we’ve created leadership training programmes and workshops which are focused on management behaviours and mindsets, and combine coaching models with psychotherapeutic frameworks.
Anyway, the reason that I say all this is, boy, have we worked hard, and quite frankly, there hasn’t been a huge amount of time off in all of that!!
I’ve also moved house down to the beach, and I want some time to settle in and really make it feel like home.
However, here’s the thing - I know my brain, and I am pretty terrible at taking time off!
Look, I’m a founder - not only is PUSH my baby, but the truth is, working also makes me feel safe. Let’s be clear: there are a whole host of deep-rooted issues at the base of this (which I am happily working on in therapy to overcome!). However, for the sake of making life a bit easier for myself and not having my brain prang out whilst I’m off, I’ve decided that I’m going to ‘work-lite’ across this period.
For me, that definitely means a couple of weeks of a proper break and then a couple of weeks of more creative thinking that I just don’t get the time for normally. So, reading, writing, creating content, etc.
I also know that I am much more productive in the morning. So, the morning will be for doing that more reflective work and in the afternoons and evenings, I’ll be back in holiday mode!
Don’t get me wrong - I HUGELY believe in the importance of breaks for supporting our wellbeing, and I am really good at setting boundaries much more consistently now. However, I also understand my brain and some of its more deep-rooted issues, and this, for me, is a means of managing it well to give me greater and more consistent peace of mind. Which is always my biggest goal.
So, my friends, if you’re about to take a break, can I urge you to really think about how you need it to look like for you.
- How do you want to feel?
- What would the break look like to ensure that you feel like that more consistently?
- What are your normal energy levels?
- How might that affect your planning?
- Who do you need to communicate this with in order to ensure it happens?
And that last point is super crucial - if you have a partner or family that might have different expectations to you, do make sure that you share your plans so that everyone’s in the loop and you don’t set everyone’s break off on the wrong foot!
Wishing you a calm, peaceful and nourishing week. I hope you truly get exactly the break you deserve.
With love always,
Cate x
