Hey there,
Let me start this week's newsletter by telling you a story...
In 2022 my business, PUSH, achieved a turnover of over 7 figures.
It was an incredible year. We had 10 people in the team. We were working with some massive clients, delivering some unbelievable projects and being invited to pitch for huge, global brands.
But, if you saw me, you absolutely would have not have known it. I was stressed out, worried about hitting numbers, constantly concerned about if I was doing enough and always on the lookout for the ‘next thing’. Put simply, I was riddled with self-doubt and, quite frankly, my self-esteem was pretty diabolical too. Which is ironic, given I’d grown a 7-figure business from my childhood bedroom. So, you could argue, I was doing something right.
I was reminded of this yesterday, when I was coaching a manager about to start our Management Behaviours programme, when she said ‘I just want to know that I’m a good manager’. Now, here’s the thing, this is a woman who has heard verbatim from both her team and her leadership that she’s a great manager. She’s turned around both the sickness and attrition levels in her team. And, performance is up too.
So, my question to her was ‘when will you know?!’
You see, when we doubt ourselves, it really doesn’t matter what external proof we have of how well we're doing because we can’t see it, don’t believe it and we certainly don’t feel it. In fact, I remember when one of my friends said to me ‘do you ever actually stop to see how far you’ve come?’ and, of course, I didn’t. I was just always on to the next thing.
Now, this does also bring up a really interesting point that, maybe then, we should be concerned with doing more of the right stuff that makes us feel good, rather than seeking commercial successes but that’s a whole other story - and maybe I’ll share that next week!
However, in the meantime, what can you do right now if you know that self-doubt is something that plagues you and stops you really enjoying everything you achieve and everything that you are?
1. Think about all the things that are uniquely you and how brilliant they are. Strip out the comparison to others and think about what you and only you can do.
2. Think about all of the stuff you do brilliantly and do more of it! It will make you feel great as well as giving you an immense sense of satisfaction.
3. Remember you’re not alone. So many other people feel exactly the same way too. So, despite appearances, please stop comparing yourself to others' successes and thinking they’re better than you.
Now, remember, feeling confident in yourself doesn’t happen overnight.
But, it can happen. I have been delivering management coaching all week with some incredible managers and I really cannot tell you how brilliant the sessions are for helping change their perspective and engagement.
If you’re keen to think about how we might work with your team too, then do get in touch!
With love always,
